Snowflake Showcase #3 Pop-Up Box Card

How to make the Pop-Up Box element without using a die

For my 3rd Snowflake Showcase project I have this stunning pop-up box card to share with you.

I’ve seen several card tutorials recently where they made the Pop-Up Box using a die.  As my passion is making boxes and I love a challenge I just had to work out how it was done.  It took me a few attempts but as you can see I got there in the end and at the bottom of this blog post you will find 2 templates and all the cutting and scoring dimensions to make the pop-up box.

I made the card base and pop-up box with Crumb Cake cardstock, I rarely use this colour when I’m crafting but recently it has been one of my Christmas go to colours.  This is a VERY sparkly card, all the snowflakes were die-cut in sparkle glimmer paper and I also added Wink of Stella to the box. 

If you don’t want to add the pop-up element just having the snowflakes on the front would make a beautiful card. 

When I finished making the card I decided it needed a belly band, the card isn’t bulky but it wouldn’t stay closed and I wanted to keep the inside as a surprise.  I hope that makes sense.  This time I die-cut the large snowflake in Vellum and added one of the beautiful Snowflake Trinkets to the centre.  There are 2 different styles of silver snowflakes to choose from and you can heat emboss them.

How to make the pop-up box (Sized for an A6 card)

To make the box you will need:-

• 7½” x 4″ piece of cardstock or DSP.  The template below shows the scoring if you have a directional pattern.
• Simply Scored or other scoring tool
• Snips
• Bone folder
• Tear & Tape or other strong double sided adhesive

1. With the long side at the top of the score board score it at 1¾”, 3½”, 5¼” and 7″.
2. Rotate 90° (short side is at the top of the score board) and score at 1¾”. 
3. Flip the cardstock/DSP over (wrong side is facing upwards) and score at 3½”.  This scoreline is for the top flaps of the box.  These are folded in the opposite direction to the rest of the score lines, that’s why you score on the back.
4. Fold and burnish all the scorelines with your bone folder.

• All the areas that are show in blue in the template below need to be removed.
• On the ½” section at the top cut the remaining 3 scorelines as shown in the template below and round all of the corners.
• The orange arrows show where you need to add Tear & Tape.  

• Adhere the ½” tab at the side.
• Remove the tape liner from one of the triangles, place it face up next to the centre scoreline of the cardbase and close the card.
• Repeat for the other triangular section.

For the strips of cardstock that go across the box I cut them to ½” x 2¼” and scored at ¼” on both sides.
