I have had so many requests to do a tutorial for the Partial Embossing cards I shared with you on Wednesday and the feedback has been amazing.
In this post I will show you how I achieved the partial embossing, I am working on another blog post showing how I stamped and coloured the beautiful bride from the Wonderful Moments stamp set.
New and experienced crafters will be able to do this technique, it’s not difficult so please don’t be put off, give it a try and see what you think. I know you will love it.
Before I get into this in-depth tutorial I do have to point out a few things.
All Big Shots/die-cutting machines are different and this tutorial is based on what worked with my Big Shot. You may need to experiment to see what works with your machine. If you try this technique please don’t try to force the embossing folder through your machine because you may break it. Adjust your sandwich and try again.
I would also suggest trying this out on some cheap cardstock first until you know what works with your machine.

Partial Embossing Technique

There are 2 ways to do the partial embossing technique and I will explain both of them. They probably both have a fancy name but I’m calling them Technique 1 & 2.
Technique 1
Template
To get the partial embossing effect as shown above you need to make a template that has a die-cut shape in it, a ‘window’. Everything around that die-cut shape will be embossed and the window area will not.
I have used the largest die in the Layering Ovals and Layering Squares Framelits dies here but you can use any shape/size.
To make the template you will need:-
- 2 pieces of Card – I used a cereal box.
- A Die
- Tear & Tape or another double sided tape.
For the 4-1/2″ x 6-1/4″ (11.5 cms x 15.8 cms) Embossing Folders
Cut 2 pieces of card that measure 4-1/4″ x 6″ (11 cms x 15.5 cms).
Place your die on the 1st piece of card where you would like your ‘window’, tape the die in place and run it through your die-cutting machine (picture 1). TIP: You can also make several smaller windows and have several area’s that aren’t embossed. It does look really effective.
Keeping the die taped to the 1st piece of card line it up with the 2nd piece (picture 2) and run it through your die-cutting machine a few times until it cuts both pieces. If you have problems cutting through the 2nd piece of card run it through your machine a couple of times and then you should be able to slot the die into the indented area.
Keep both die-cuts because you can use them for the 2nd technique.
After cutting through both pieces add your adhesive to the outside edges and around the edge of the window (picture 3).
To make it easier to line up both pieces I added a small amount of liquid glue onto the double sided tape and then adhered them. Lesson learnt: Make sure you let the liquid glue dry before running your template through your die-cutting machine otherwise the glue will seep out. I know this because I thought it would be a great idea to run it through my Big Shot to make sure it was adhered properly and got glue on both cutting plates. Ooops.
For the 6″ x 6″ (15.2 cms x 15.2 cms) Embossing Folders
Cut 2 pieces of card that measure 6″ x 6″ (15.2 cms x 15.2 cms) and follow the steps above.
Keep both die-cut pieces.
Technique 2
Adhere the 2 die-cut pieces you had left-over from your ‘window’. When you place these in an embossing folder it will only emboss the area where the die-cut is. This also gives a great effect.
The Fun Bit
I have tried a few different ways with this technique and I found you get a better impression from your embossing folder if you place the template behind your cardstock.
- Put your cardstock inside the front panel of the embossing folder. (The front of the embossing folder has the Stampin’ Up! logo and Sizzix logo).
- Place your template behind the cardstock and close the embossing folder.
If you are using a Textured Impressions Embossing Folder
For a Textured Impressions Embossing Folder I used Tab 2 and 1 cutting plate on my Big Shot. Sandwich Tab 2, embossing folder then 1 cutting plate.
For the newer platform I think this is both the platform and the thin die adaptor but you will need to find out what works best with your machine/platform. Don’t try to force it through your machine because you could damage it.
If you are using a Dynamic/3D Textured Impressions Embossing Folder
The Dynamic/3D Textured Impressions Embossing Folder is a lot thicker than the Textured Impressions Embossing Folders. With this type of folder I used Tab 1 with no cutting plates. For the newer platform I think this is just the platform (no thin die adaptor) but you will need to find out what works best with your machine/platform. Again don’t try to force it through your machine because you could break it.

TIP: When you know the sandwich for both types of embossing folders write them on the template so you will know for next time. It has been a few years since I used this technique but because I had the sandwich written on each template I didn’t have to work it all out again.

*When designing a project or when I CASE (Copy And Share Everything) someone’s project I ALWAYS make it with some cheap cardstock first. When making/trying any project I recommend making it first with the cheap stuff. When we are typing up lots of measurements mistakes can be made, we are human after all. It doesn’t help that I have Dyscalculia.
