Sorry for my absence and the delay in posting the tutorials for the Fold Flat Gift Bags and Cards but at the moment I can’t upload any photo’s to my website. I have my website host looking into this and hopefully she will fix it soon.
Today I have the tutorial for making fold flat gift bags. These are quick and easy to make and they can be made by crafters with any level of experience. These bags can be made in any size.
The largest bag I made with 2 sheets of 12″ x 12″ DSP/Cardstock was 9-1/2″ (w) x 10″ (h) x 2″ (d).
Both pieces of DSP/cardstock are the same size. What you do to one piece you do exactly the same to the other piece, the only difference will be the back piece will have an extra score line to enable the bag to fold flat.
To make the 9-1/2″ x 10″ x 2″ Gift Bag you will need:-
- 2 pieces of 12″ x 12″ DSP or cardstock
- Adhesive of your choice. I tried using liquid glue on the first bag for wiggle room but I found it wrinkled the paper, Tear & Tape or any double sided tape was much better.
- Score board
- Bone folder
- Paper snips
- Hole punch
- Ribbon for the handles
Front of the Bag
If you are using DSP that has a directional pattern place the DSP in the score board with the pattern going the right way and score at 2″ (side panel/depth of the bag) and 11-1/2″ (tab). You will also need to part score at 1″ down to 9″.
Rotate the DSP/cardstock 90 degrees clockwise and score at 2″ (this will be the base of the bag).
You will need to do this to both pieces.
If you don’t want the bag to fold flat you can now assemble the bag.
Back of the Bag
For the back of the bag the only difference is the extra score line that enables you to fold the bag. On 1 of the pieces where you scored at 2″ for the base of the bag you need to add another score line at 3″ (shown in blue in the image below).
Once you have all the score lines you will need to use a stylus and ruler to add the triangular score lines (shown in green in the image below).
Cut and mitre the tabs. Add adhesive to the side tabs and the base of the bag and adhere.

*When designing a project or when I CASE (Copy And Share Everything) someone’s project I ALWAYS make it with some cheap cardstock first. When typing up lots of measurements mistakes can be made, we are human after all. It doesn’t help that I have Dyscalculia. When making any project I recommend making it first with the cheap stuff.*
