Devi’s 18th Birthday Card

I was in two minds whether to share this birthday card I made for a very special young lady who celebrated her 18th birthday recently because some of the products I used are retired stamps and dies.

I’m at a crossroads with my crafting/blogging.  I was tidying my craftroom and I got upset whilst putting my stamps away because I have beautiful stamps that I love yet I avoid using them because they are retired or they’re not Stampin’ Up!

I started this blog to share my creations with you in the hope that it may inspire you to spend some time crafting.  I don’t do this to get people to order from me I do it because I have so much love for crafting and it helps me mentally and physically.  I want to use what I have in my craft supplies so I’m not sure if I want to continue as a demonstrator.

I know there are lots of crafters who have retired Stampin’ Up! products and still love to use them.  I think the crafters who follow my blog do so because they like my projects not because I use current Stampin’ Up! products.

Anyway onto todays card.  I wanted to make Devi’s card in her favourite colours Red and Black.  I played around with the layout on the front of the card until I was happy with it.  In order to fit everything on the front of the card I needed to make an A5 card (a full sheet of UK A4 cardstock folded in half).

The photo below shows the original idea I had for the inside of the card but I had to change it slightly because there was too much empty space on the left hand side and I didn’t like it.

I went with Real Red cardstock for The Big Wheel and the stars, the Cherry Cobbler looked too dark.  The die for the stars doesn’t cut the bottom part of the die it only cuts the stars so this is just 1 piece of cardstock.

I used the Large Numbers framelits dies to die-cut the 18 in Real Red cardstock too.  I had some scraps of Silver Foil sheets and I used them to die-cut the 18 and the stars and layered these to give a shadow effect.

The tickets on the left hand side of the die were die-cut with a Fuzzy Lemon die.  While the cardstock was still in the die I used a dauber and Whisper White Craft ink and daubed over the ‘Admit One’.  Fuzzy Lemon also has a Big Wheel die.

I don’t know if Devi is a sparkle type of girl but the inside of her card is a sheet of black glitter paper, it’s a shame it wouldn’t show up in the photo’s.

I added the large Happy Birthday die-cut to the left hand side of the card to fill up some of the ‘black space’.  I used the Pretty Label punch for the sentiment and there was plenty of room for me to write in the card.

I was so pleased with the way the card turned out, it was much better than I thought it would be.  I couldn’t wait to give Devi her card, I wanted to see her reaction.  Devi squealed with delight when she opened it and she gave me a big but gentle hug.  Her mum Rachel told me that the cards I make for her children are the only cards the children keep which makes me feel guilty that they don’t keep their parents or grandparents cards.
