Elves Just Wanna Have Fun Screen Card Tutorial

I have had several questions about the Elves Just Wanna Have Fun screen card that I shared as part of last weekends Pootler’s Team Blog Hop and I thought the easiest way to answer them all was to do a blog post.

I have been askeed to do a tutorial but unfortuanly I didn’t take photo’s while making the card but I have got a photo showing the ‘Pull Tab mechanism’ that I used for the Elf in the Christmas Stocking.

Card Base

6″ x 12″ piece of Thick White cardstock, scored on the long side at 3″, 6″ and 9″.  Fold and burnish all the scorelines.

To shape the bottom of my card I used the Story Label Punch but use punches or dies that you already have. 

To get all the panels the same I punched the 1st panel, folded it over onto the 2nd panel, lined the punch up with the 1st punched panel and punched.  Continue until all the panels are done.

Mats for each Panel

To work out the size of the mats I measured the distance between the top of the punched cutout and the top of the card. On my card this was 5 3/8″ but your mats may need to be a different size.

On my card there was nowhere for me to write a personal message so I added another panel on the back of the card. 

You will need 5 pieces of 2¾” x 5 1/8″ Seaside Spray cardstock and 5 pieces of 2½” x 4 7/8″ white cardstock.

The Jumping Elf

To make the interactive part of the card I first placed the Elf where I wanted it to be and used a pencil to lightly draw around it.

The Classic Label Punch was too long to hide behind the Elf in the Christmas Stocking but after going through all my dies I found the small label die in the Merry Christmas dies was perfect (below).  

I placed the die within the pencil outline of the Elf and ran it through my die-cutting machine.  *Keep the fall-out piece that is left in the die as you will need it later.  

For the Pull Tab mechanism you will need:-

• 1 piece of 5/8″ x 4 ¾” thick cardstock for the pull tab
• 4 pieces of ¾” x 4 ¾” thick cardstock
• Double sided adhesive
• A mini dimensional

To adhere the Elf onto the pull tab

Centre the 5/8″ x 4 ¾” cardstock pull tab on one of the 2½” x 4 7/8″ thick white cardstock panels and temporarily adhere with some washie tape. (* If you have stamped or embossed the panel you need to adhere the pull tab on the back of the panel).

Flip the panel over and place a mini dimensional in the centre and towards the bottom of the track (the die-cut label shape). *When placing the mini dimensional make sure there is sufficient room for the pull tab to move up and down.  The dimensional will also act as a stopper.

Erase the pencil outline, hover your Elf above the mini dimensional and when you have the Elf where you want it adhere it to the mini dimensional.  

In the picture below you will see that I have cut away part of the pull tab at the bottom.   Before I adhered this panel I could see the bottom of the pull tab when I moved the elf up and down so I cut away all the excess. 

The strips of white cardstock either side of the pull tab are 2 of the ¾” x 4¾” pieces of cardstock that were adhered together.  Once you have adhered these you can remove the washi tape that was holding the pull tab in place.  Leaving a small gap either side of the pull tab I adhered the 2 strips with double sided tape.  Doing this keeps the pull tab in place.

Add double sided tape to the 2 side pieces, as shown below and adhere to 1 of the Seaside Spray panels.

Once adhered pull the pull tab up and adhere the little fall-out piece of die-cut cardstock with liquid glue, it will give you time to wiggle it into place.
